</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>That's the good news. The bad news is Smith is in serious pain, may need an MRI and the Rock Hill Herald says early indications are that he'll miss the preseason. It may turn out to be minor, but we can't help thinking about when Smith's hamstring injury in July of 2006 kept him "day-to-day" for six weeks. Expect further updates.

Smith started and played extensively in the first half, even drawing a 10-yard personal foul penalty after an 11-yard first-quarter catch to prove he's back to his old self. Early indications were that Smith would miss the entire preseason due to an August 10 shoulder sprain. He's 100 percent.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Chris Gamble would be Carolina's best other option after rookie Captain Munnerlyn struggled with ball security in preseason. Smith's stint on punts won't last into Week 2 with Mark Jones likely to come aboard next Tuesday, so return-yardage leaguers need to take advantage while the getting's good.

Expect Redskins RCB Carlos Rogers to get plenty of help on Smith this week as well.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Smith was hot under the collar after catching just one ball in the Week 6 win over the Bucs. He has 21 catches through five games and hasn't caught a touchdown pass since Week 15 of 2008. Smith will be helped by the improvement of Carolina's running game, which is finally hitting on all cylinders.

This is the first we've heard of any problems with Smith and anytime a player is added to the injury report on Saturday it's a concern. We don't know yet when Smith got hurt, but we have to consider him a game-time decision even though he's known as one of the toughest players in the league. The Panthers play at 1 p.m. ET, so we'll know early if Smith is active.

Smith's season is obviously over and he will have surgery on Monday. The injury happened when he took a big hit from Giants S Michael Johnson while scoring a 27-yard touchdown. Smith's value was actually on the rise with Matt Moore playing so well, but who will be throwing the ball to Smith in 2010 is unclear right now.
